ICAE Mentorship Project

ICAE has a mentorship project funded by the Government of Alberta. This is a unique mentorship opportunity for skilled Igbo immigrants. Interested members will be linked to mentors in their fields of study.

The focus of the project includes:

  • Assisting Igbo immigrants in acquiring the relevant skillset, information, and connections needed to enable them to pursue careers that relate to their fields of study or chosen professions in line with professional experience.

  • Providing mentorship to Igbo immigrants by connecting them to professionals in their desired or chosen industry.

  • Connecting employers and Igbo immigrants through platforms that will enhance and assist them with job retention efforts.

These will be done through:

Resource Pointer Services – Headed by Ugochi Agbo

Among others, the subcommittee will gather information about certification and entry requirements for a variety of professions in Alberta and Canada. They will also develop a roadmap of how to integrate into different professions successfully.

Mentorship Services – Headed by Chidi Nwajiaku and Dr. Idong Obiefuna

The subcommittee will connect Igbo immigrants with experienced professionals in their fields of experience by seeking and obtaining a pool of mentors and mentees. Mentees are open primarily to Ndigbo, other mentees may be allowed if there are not enough Igbo mentees.

Employer-Immigrant Integration Program – Headed by Cynthia Onyegbula

This subcommittee will connect mentees with potential employers. They will organize information sessions aimed at making Igbo immigrants ready for job markets. They will also assist Igbo immigrants with reviewing and preparing resumes, interview coaching sessions, job shadowing, volunteer opportunities, and internship opportunities.

Professional Association Lunch and Learn – Headed by Dr. Collins Ugochukwu

This subcommittee will hold lunch & learn with professional bodies and associations on licensing requirements for the new immigrants, thereby providing an avenue for the professional bodies to explain the criteria necessary for licensing.
